Student Activists Detained During Protest in Agartala

On July 4, 2024, student activists from the Tripura Student Union (TSU) and the Student Federation of India (SFI) staged a protest in front of Shiksha Bhawan, Agartala. The demonstration was held to oppose school mergers, delays in providing textbooks, teacher shortages, and the failed Vidyajyoti Scheme. Protestors also condemned the attack on eight girl students during a previous protest.

As the protestors marched from Chatra Yuva Bhawan to Shiksha Bhawan, Agartala police intervened and detained SFI State Secretary Sandeepan Deb, along with other students. The incident has drawn widespread media attention, with concerns raised about the detention of student activists, seen as a reprisal against Human Rights Defenders. An appeal has been made to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to take cognizance of the event and initiate an independent inquiry.
