On March 25, 2025, members of Assam Jatiya Parishad's youth wing, Jatiya Yuva Shakti, staged a protest at the Assam Cooperative Apex Bank headquarters in Panbazar, Guwahati, alleging financial irregularities and demanding a high-level inquiry. Senior journalist Dilwar Hussain Mozumdar from The Cross Current and Assistant General Secretary of the Guwahati Press Club covered the protest and questioned the bank’s Managing Director on financial mismanagement.
Following the protest, Panbazar police summoned and arrested Mozumdar without informing him of the grounds or following due process. Later, police stated that the arrest was based on an FIR filed by the bank's security guard, alleging that Mozumdar made offensive and derogatory remarks. The FIR was registered under charges of criminal intimidation and violations of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
The incident has received widespread media coverage. The appeal urges authorities to take suo moto cognizance under Section 12(a) of the Protection of Human Rights (Amendment) Act, 2019, and initiate an independent NHRC inquiry.
