Murder of Disabled RTI Activist

On October 12, 2025, Rasik Parmar, a highly regarded right to information (RTI) activist—disabled and operating with limited mobility—was abducted from a relative’s house after years of exposing multi-crore scams and irregularities in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). Parmar was known to have received repeated death threats from political goons Raju Karate and Kamlesh Solanki due to his RTI work, which included formal complaints and exposure of illicit housing and shop allocations (1,449 houses, 130 shops implicated). Despite ongoing intimidation, Parmar continued to pursue transparency. On October 14, his body was found dumped in a canal near Tharad Lake, showing signs of strangulation. An FIR was promptly filed by his nephew, naming the individuals who had previously threatened him. The incident has rocked Gujarat’s activist community and made national headlines, with civil society condemning the climate of impunity around attacks on whistleblowers and anti-corruption campaigners.

HRDA demands that the NHRC take suo moto cognizance under Section 12(a), direct a high-level and independent investigation, ensure the immediate arrest and prosecution of all those responsible, and establish robust protection and support mechanisms for RTI activists and whistleblowers targeted for their work.
