On September 7, 2025, around 12:30 PM, journalist Sujit Sarkar (also known as Hari Pada Sarkar) was violently attacked near Lumding Railway Institute in Assam by a group of twenty people wielding wooden planks and iron rods. The mob not only physically assaulted him but also vandalized his motorcycle and robbed him of his mobile phone, gold chain, wallet, and Press ID card. Sarkar sustained serious injuries and was hospitalized at Lumding Civil Hospital before being referred for advanced treatment in Guwahati. The attack came after he reported on sensitive local issues, and his complaint named several local goons with political links. Lumding police registered an FIR and began investigation, but the incident has underscored the threats journalists face from criminal and political elements when reporting fearlessly.
HRDA is seeking the NHRC to take suo moto cognizance under Section 12(a) and direct an independent investigation, ensuring journalist safety and accountability for all attackers.
