E9 TV journalist Mr. Chobey, who traveled to report on the incident, faced harassment from police officers and officials while gathering information at the Motilal Nehru Medical College mortuary. He was forcibly expelled, prevented from reporting, and threatened with arrest.
This action violates fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution, including freedom of speech and expression (Article 19(1)(a)), freedom of association (Article 19(1)(c)), the right to practice his profession (Article 19(1)(g)), and the right to life and personal liberty (Article 21).
Given the severity of the issue, Human Rights Defenders Alert (HRDA) urges the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to take suo moto cognizance under Section 12(a) of the Protection of Human Rights (Amendment) Act, 2019. The demand includes an independent investigation through the NHRC’s inquiry wing to ensure accountability and transparency.
