Bengaluru, May 10, 2024: Members of the Karnataka General Labour Union (AICCTU) staged a protest at Victoria Hospital, Bengaluru, on May 8, 2024, in response to the arbitrary removal of 56 ward attenders from their jobs. The protesters, including the affected workers, demanded the reinstatement of the employees and payment of their pending salaries.
On May 9, the protest intensified, leading to threats from local police. The following day, May 10, 50 protesters were taken into preventive detention by V.V. Puram police, though they were later released around 5:30 PM. The protest has gained media attention, and labour rights activists have condemned the detentions as an act of retaliation.
Labour groups are calling on the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to launch an independent inquiry into the police actions under Section 12(a) of the Protection of Human Rights (Amendment) Act, 2019.
