Mr. Gaidon Kamei
President of United Naga Council
Imphal, Manipur.
HRDA has issued an urgent appeal to the National Human Rights Commission of India on 27th January regarding the torture and inhumane treatment of Mr. Gaidon Kamei by the Police of Manipur state.
Mr. Gaidon who is the president of the United Naga Council was arrested from the Pheidinga area along NH-2 on November 25, 2016, by a team of Imphal West Police. He was arrested for protesting after the Government of Manipur failed to implement four Memorandums of Understanding between Naga civic bodies and the Government of Manipur and also against any move by the State Government to create new districts in areas which they consider their
‘ancestral homeland’.
Mr. Gaidon Kamei was subjected to illegal torture and inhumane treatment in police custody since November 25, 2016, including ‘electric shock’ in the ‘Joint Interrogation Cell’ in the Kangla fort complex in Imphal City. Mr. Gaidon Kamei has expressed excruciating pain on the left portion of his body due to police torture and prayed for treatment.
HRDA had appealed to the commission to take an immediate, thorough, transparent, effective, and impartial investigation into the above-mentioned complaint of the torture in police custody and to take immediate action on the perpetrators, in this case, the Manipur Police, for their acts.
