KSU Activists Arrested During Peaceful Protest in Kozhikode

On June 16, 2024, members of the Kerala Students Union (KSU) staged a peaceful protest at the office of the Regional Deputy Director of Education in Kozhikode. The protest was organized to demand justice for students who achieved full A+ grades in the Class 10 exams but were denied admission to Class 11.

KSU activists, including District President V.T. Suraj, State Committee member Arjun Poonath, and District Vice Presidents M.P. Ragin, Fayis Naduvannur, and Fauvad Suveen, arrived at the protest site at 10:15 am. After informing the Deputy Director of their grievances, the students began a sit-in protest. Kozhikode police intervened, forcibly removed them from the office campus, and detained several activists.

The incident, widely covered in the media, has raised concerns over the police's actions. An appeal has been made to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to take suo moto cognizance of the matter and initiate an independent investigation, as the detentions are seen as reprisals against student activism.
