On July 9, 2024, Sri Charan, a news reporter from Zee Telugu, was harassed and detained by Telangana police while covering a student protest at Osmania University. The students were demonstrating against the District Selection Committee (DSC) exam notification, calling for its postponement to allow more time for preparation.
While reporting the protest, Charan was apprehended by Inspector Rajender, who allegedly grabbed him by the collar and detained him despite knowing he was a journalist. Charan was taken to the Osmania University police station.
This incident has sparked widespread media attention, raising concerns about police action against journalists. The harassment is being viewed as a potential act of reprisal against Charan's activism. A formal appeal has been made to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to exercise Section 12(a) of the Protection of Human Rights (Amendment) Act, 2019, and initiate an independent investigation into the incident.
