Journalist Attacked During Student Protest Coverage in Tripura

Dharmanagar, Tripura – On July 2, 2024, students of Jeevan Tripura Higher Secondary School staged a protest near the Dharmanagar-Kailashahar road, demanding the cancellation of a teacher's transfer. The protest turned violent when school management and locals reportedly intimidated, verbally abused, and assaulted the students.

Journalist Aritra Sen, who arrived at the scene to cover the event, was also threatened and verbally abused. Miscreants seized the cameras of several journalists documenting the assault and deleted the footage.

Aritra Sen subsequently filed a police complaint against four attackers at the Dharmanagar Police Station, but no action has been taken so far by local authorities.

The Tripura Working Journalist Association condemned the attack, calling for the immediate arrest of the culprits. They have also appealed to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to intervene, demanding an independent inquiry under Section 12(a) of the Protection of Human Rights (Amendment) Act, 2019.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage, raising concerns over the safety of journalists and student activists.
