On January 4, 2024, farmers from J Krishnapuram village in Sulur taluk petitioned the revenue department to convert a cart track land to a geological cart tract, citing difficulties in transporting essential goods. Despite their plea, bureaucratic delays ensued, leading the farmers to stage a peaceful waiting protest at the district collector's office. However, the situation escalated when Race Course police intervened, detaining 60 protestors and confining them in a local marriage hall. This incident has garnered significant media coverage, shedding light on the farmers' plight.

The detention of these farmers raises serious concerns regarding the infringement of their fundamental rights, including the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, both enshrined in international instruments and the Indian Constitution. Human Rights Defenders Alert sought Urgent action through an appeal to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), urging them to invoke Section 12 (a) of the Protection of Human Rights (Amendment) Act, 2019 as its part of suo moto case.
