House arrest and Harassment of HRD Anil Hansda by NIA

On May 2, 2023, at 5:15 AM, 4-5 police personnel, accompanied by civilian-clothed individuals, arrived at activist Mr. Anil Hansda's Lalpaniya residence in Jharkhand without a house search notice. His house was searched for four hours, and electronic devices were seized without providing hash values. His wife was interrogated for 8 hours. Two days later, Mr. Hansda was asked to meet NIA officials regarding a case under IPC and UAPA sections. The incident raises concerns of targeted harassment against HRDs in Jharkhand, violating their rights to life, liberty, and freedom of speech. The UN Declaration on human rights defenders emphasizes protection against arbitrary actions for the legitimate exercise of rights

Appealing to the NHRC for urgent investigation into the alleged reprisal against human rights defenders in Jharkhand. Requests include an immediate, independent, and impartial investigation into house searches, non-provision of hash values, and fabricated charges against Mr. Anil Hansda and others. Seeks a report within two weeks and, based on findings, recommends punitive action against officials. Also urges the provision of physical and psychological security to Mr. Anil Hansda's family, cessation of harassment, and steps to ensure HRDs can work without fear in the state.
