On 23.05.2025, the Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development formed a Disciplinary Committee which accused seven students of “anti-national activities” for writing “Jai Bhim” and “Pro-Palestine” slogans. Based on its report, the Director suspended and expelled them from the hostel on 25.05.2025, just before their final exams. The action was taken without evidence of violence or due hearing, severely affecting their academics. Students alleged bias, linking the action to their earlier protest exposing a sexual assault case against Assistant Registrar Avinav Thakur, who allegedly influenced the enquiry. One student, Aslam S, challenged the suspension in Madras High Court, which stayed the order and directed the institute to allow him to continue his exams and academic programme.
We urge the Hon’ble Commission to take cognisance of the above case and urgently:
- Direct the investigation division of the NHRC enquiry into the case and submit the report before the commission within four weeks.
- Direct the administration of Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development, Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, to withdraw the suspension order dated 25.05.2025 and reinstate students and give it to writing to the NHRC within one week.
