HRDA has issued an urgent appeal to the National Human Rights Commission of India on March 24, 2021, regarding the disproportionate use of force on protesting citizens by the Kolkata Police, leading to the death of Mr. Maidul Islam Midda. Mr. Midda was an auto-rickshaw driver and an activist of the Democratic Youth Federation of India from Bankura, West Bengal.

Mr. Midda participated in a march to West Bengal State Secretariate on February 11, 2021, organized by youth and student organizations against corruption, unemployment, and political violence in the state. The police resorted to lathi-charge and used tear gas and water cannon against the protestors which led to hundreds of protestors getting severely injured. Mr. Midda was assaulted by boots and lathis including on his abdominal areas. He died on February 15, 2021, after four days of treatment at the hospital. The doctor treating Mr. Midda confirmed that his death was due to acute renal failure following excessive assault on the muscles.
