Detention of 8 Activists during Kashmir Solidarity Protest

On April 29, 2025, journalist and activist Rejaz M Sheeba Sydeek, with eight members of Friends of Palestine, Kochi, organised a protest at Panampally Central Park to express solidarity with Kashmiris. Although Rejaz sought permission for the march, the Enrankaulam Town South Police Station denied permission just before the event. Despite this, Rejaz and eight others (five men and three women) continued with the peaceful protest.

Police detained all eight participants at the site. Although released later, an FIR was filed under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, including those relating to unlawful assembly, rioting, public obstruction, and liability of members of an unlawful assembly. All eight were summoned again by the police on April 30, 2025. The incident has drawn media coverage and public concern over freedom of assembly and expression, given the peaceful nature of the march and the broad criminal charges levied against the activists.

HRDA is explicitly seeking the NHRC to take suo moto cognizance (Section 12(a), Protection of Human Rights Amendment Act, 2019), initiate an independent inquiry through its investigation wing, and ensure prompt, impartial resolution of the case to protect the rights of the detained activists.
