HRDA has issued an urgent appeal to the National Human Rights Commission of India on October 29, 2021, regarding the denial of telephonic communication to HRDs accused in the Bhima Koregaon-Elgar Parishad case, incarcerated in the Taloja and Byculla jails in Maharashtra.
Discontinuing phone calls has caused great hardship to the HRDs and their family members who were not living in Maharashtra. Many of them had financial constraints and were unable to meet the HRDs in person at the prisons.
As per the UN Standard Minimum Rules for Treatment of Prisoners 1955 and the Nelson Mandela Rules 2015, one of the basic rights of prisoners is to allow them to communicate with their family members and relatives.
