The Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting recently suspended the license of the Marathi news channel 'Lokshahi' for 30 days, citing discrepancies in the ownership of the channel. This action comes after the channel had previously received a 72-hour suspension notice last year for reporting on an alleged sex tape involving BJP leader Mr. Kirit Somaiya. Despite appealing against the previous suspension in the Delhi High Court, which ruled in favour of the channel, the ministry has again suspended its license.
This move has been widely interpreted as an infringement on the freedom of speech and expression, essential for media functioning as the fourth pillar of democracy. HRDA appeals for suo moto intervention from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) under Section 12 (a) of the Protection of Human Rights (Amendment) Act, 2019 to initiate an impartial inquiry into the matter and ensure a timely resolution.
