Delhi University Professor S.N.Saibaba was released on March 5, 2024, after spending a decade in prison. The 56-year-old, who is 90% disabled and wheelchair-bound, was convicted alongside four others in 2017 by a Maharashtra court on charges of “terrorism” and sentenced to life. Despite his severe disabilities, Professor Saibaba endured harsh prison conditions, including solitary confinement in an "anda cell" and constant surveillance, which violated his basic human rights.
The Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court overturned the trial court's verdict, acquitting Saibaba and the others involved, calling the initial ruling a "failure of justice." The professor recounted the inhumane treatment he faced, including being denied medical care and subjected to degrading conditions, which left him physically debilitated. He also revealed that his suffering began at the time of his arrest in 2014, where he was dragged by police, causing permanent injury to his arm.
During his time in prison, Saibaba contracted COVID-19 twice and swine flu, yet was repeatedly denied emergency medical treatment. He spent over eight years without access to a wheelchair and struggled daily to perform basic functions like using the toilet or drinking water.
His release marks a significant moment, as human rights defenders raise concerns about state repression. Calls are now being made to hold the Maharashtra government accountable, urging for compensation for the unlawful incarceration and inhumane treatment of Professor Saibaba.
