Criminalizing peaceful protest of farmers

For 137 days, farmers of Sarasani, Harima, and nearby villages protested peacefully against JSW Cement demanding fair compensation and jobs. On January 8, 2025, police, under district orders, used lathi charge to forcibly end the protest and filed FIRs with grave charges against 27 farmers. Despite promises of dialogue, no resolution has been made. In March, JSW vehicles damaged farmland, leading to fresh protests, detentions, and intimidation of villagers. Farmers petitioned the Governor demanding release of detainees and an end to repression. These actions violate Articles 19 and 21 of the Indian Constitution and international human rights standards, criminalizing peaceful assembly and undermining farmers’ democratic rights. We urge the Hon’ble Commission to take cognizance of the above case and urgently:

Direct the Director General of Police of Rajasthan to initiate an immediate, independent, thorough, transparent, effective, and impartial investigation into the above-mentioned incident of brutal lathi-charge on unarmed peaceful protestors and submit a report within a specific timeline.
