On May 9, 2025, the Government of India blocked access to The Wire, a respected nonprofit news website, after the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology issued an order under the IT Act, 2000. There was no prior warning, show-cause notice, or opportunity for The Wire’s editorial team to respond—bypassing legally required procedural steps. The abrupt block drew attention to the lack of accountability and due process in digital censorship actions, raising concerns among press freedom organisations and the wider public about increasing governmental overreach and the narrowing space for independent journalism in India.
HRDA appeals to the NHRC to take suo moto cognizance under Section 12(a) and to initiate an independent investigation using the Commission’s inquiry wing, pressing for legal transparency, procedural fairness, and the safeguarding of digital media rights.
