Assistant Professor punished for freedom of expression

On May 8, a day after India launched Operation Sindoor, Ms. Lora Santhakumar, Assistant Professor at SRM University, was suspended following a malicious doxing campaign. Portions of her WhatsApp status were selectively shared by right-wing handles, falsely portraying her as “anti-national.” Shockingly, the leaks originated within the university, with a student proudly posting her private details online. This led to severe harassment, including rape and death threats, forcing her to vacate her residence. Ms. Lora, who merely advocated peace, was targeted for her views, religion, and caste. HRDA asserts this is an act of reprisal violating her Constitutional rights—freedom of speech (Article 19(1)(a)), profession (Article 19(1)(g)), and life and liberty (Article 21).

We urge the Hon’ble Commission to take cognisance of the above case and urgently:

  • Direct the Director General of Investigation of the NHRC to initiate a transparent, independent inquiry into the coordinated doxing campaign, including identifying all responsible individuals, both internal and external and submit the report to the NHRC.
