On December 18, 2023. Ms. Thounaojam Brinda’s residence was attacked by members of the vigilante group Meria Paibai in Torbung village, Bishnupur District, Manipur, Ms. Brinda, a former Assistant Superintendent of Police awarded for her efforts against narcotics, faced a violent assault on her residence in Imphal, during which historical artefacts were destroyed and her house vandalized. This attack, believed to be a reprisal for her activism, raises serious concerns regarding the violation of constitutional rights, including freedom of speech, association, and the right to life and liberty.
HRDA appeals to NHRC to make urgent intervention from the Director General of Police of Manipur to ensure the safety of Ms. Brinda and her family. The attack on Ms. Brinda’s home is viewed as a disturbing act of retaliation for her human rights advocacy, demanding swift and decisive measures to hold perpetrators accountable and prevent further threats to HRDs in the region.
