Vandalizing peaceful Adivasi protesters by police

The villagers, part of the Moolwasi Bachao Manch, had been peacefully protesting against the proposed paramilitary camp and a concrete road construction through farmlands. The December 15, 2022, incident involved a midnight operation by police and paramilitary personnel, resulting in the destruction of the protest site in Burji and later the establishment of a security camp in Pusnar. The use of force, lathi charge, and vandalism led to serious injuries among protestors. HRDA contends that these actions violate fundamental rights guaranteed by the Indian Constitution, such as the right to life, personal liberty, freedom of speech, and peaceful assembly.

The situation underscores the challenges faced by HRDs advocating for the rights of marginalized communities and highlights the need for protection against reprisals for their peaceful activism. The appeal emphasizes the critical role of national and international laws in safeguarding the rights of human rights defenders.

The HRDA appeal urges the NHRC to take immediate action, including an independent investigation into the assault on protestors and the establishment of the security camp. It also calls for an inquiry into the violation of laws, accountability for police officials, and the protection of freedom of peaceful assembly and expression in Chhattisgarh
