HRDA has issued an urgent appeal to the National Human Rights Commission of India on January 30 over the illegal detention and physical assault in illegal custody of Ms. Simone Zoya Khan, in New Delhi. Ms. Simone Zoya Khan was the Vice-President of JNUSU.
The JNUSU had called for a peaceful protest on January 22, 2017 in New Delhi against the rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in the state of Jammu & Kashmir. Though the students were protesting peacefully, the Delhi police personnel started dispersing the students and used lathis to attack them. Following this, the students were detained and taken to the Tuglak Road Police Station. There, the JNUSU Vice-President, Ms. Simone Zoya Khan, was separated from other students and taken inside a room. She was beaten up and punched on the face by a woman constable of Delhi Police in Tughlak Road Police Station.
