HRDA has issued an urgent appeal to the National Human Rights Commission of India on January 9 regarding harassment and humiliation of Mr. Nirmal Kumar by government officials in Ajmer. Mr. Kumar is a lawyer and human rights defender.

Police had asked for the bail bond of Ms. Savita, one of Mr. Kumar’s clients who was jailed in a false case along with her family, to be deposited with the Sub Divisional Officer (SDO) of Kishangarhvas division in Ajmer district. On December 17, Mr. Kumar visited the SDO office to submit the same, but SDO Mr. Chhote Lal Sharma and clerk Ms. Sudha Sharma refused to accept the bail bonds, and remained adamant on sending the victim’s family to jail. Mr. Kumar tried to convince them and said their stand was helping the perpetrators, but he was humiliated and manhandled by Ms. Sharma. Mr. Kumar filed a complaint with the Bar Association of Kishangarhvas against Mr. Sharma and Ms. Sharma.
