Illegal detention and harassment of HRD Mr. Santosh Thakur

HRD Alert - India, a forum for human rights defenders, raises serious concerns over the misuse of power by Mushahari police station personnel, notably Station House Officer Mr. Narendra Kumar. HRD Mr. Santosh Thakur was unlawfully detained when attempting to file a report on behalf of a fellow citizen.

On May 10, 2023, at Mushahari police station in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, HRD Mr. Santosh Thakur and complainant Ms. Sanju Devi were unlawfully detained by Station House In-charge Mr. Narendra Kumar. They sought to file a complaint about the seizure of Ms. Devi's wheat crop. Mr. Kumar abused them, ordered their arrest without filing an FIR, and confiscated Mr. Thakur's belongings without documentation. Detained until 5:30 pm without food or water, they were released without their belongings. Ms. Devi reported the incident to Bihar police authorities, alleging collusion between police and the accused.

This abuse of power, refusal to file an FIR, and illegal confiscation violate DK Basu Guidelines, Code of Criminal Procedure, and international human rights principles. The incident raises concerns about arbitrary arrest and infringement of constitutional rights.

HRD urgently appeal to the NHRC to conduct impartial inquiry, provide CCTV evidence and take stringent action against the police officials responsible for harassing the HRD.
