Activists and Writers
Assam
HRDA has issued an urgent appeal to the National Human Rights Commission of India on July 18, 2019 regarding false charges levied against activists and writers in Assam for a poem on NRC.
On July 19, 2019 a complaint was filed at PanBazar police station, Guwahati by Mr. Pranabjit Doloi against the various activists, writers, scholars and journalists including Ms. Rehana Sultana and Ms. Karishma Hazarikan for the poem on National Register of Citizens. After filing of FIR, a group of people started threatening them with sexual remarks, threat of rape and life on their social media accounts. The poem written by Mr. Kazi Sharowar Hussain expresses the experience on the present status and life experience of the people who are harassed in the NRC (National Register of Citizens) process in Assam. The poem has been wrongly interpreted by the complainant and he has falsely accused the above-mentioned human rights defenders, activists, writers, scholars and journalists for posing serious threat to the national security of the country. Hence the action of the police in filing false complaints as First Information Report (FIR) and threatening of these human rights defenders requires immediate intervention.
Therefore, HRDA has prayed for immediate and impartial investigation into the above mentioned incident.
